Juices…so hot right now! (Toasty Turmeric Tonic)

I kicked off 2017 with a lovely case of the flu. Well, okay, first I watched some Space Needle fireworks …

then I got the flu. Even as I was feeling better and trying to also combat a case of serious cabin fever by strolling a variety of Seattle neighborhoods, absolutely nothing sounded good to eat or drink. I avoided doing both until hunger pangs became worse than the lack of appetite, and one afternoon, decided to pop into juicebox, one of my favorite healthy spots on Capitol Hill.

In my current state, I didn’t expect anything on the menu to sound good, but I knew at least it would be good for me and it would make the hunger pangs stop yelling. But then I saw an item I’d never noticed before…

turmeric gold (try heated!)
yam. carrot. apple. ginger. turmeric. orange.

Hmm…heated? Steamed juice?!

I was intrigued, yet skeptical. The only juice I’ve ever had steamed was apple, so this sounded a little odd, yet it was the first thing in about eight days that didn’t sound awful. At the time, that was about as good as it was going to get, so I went for it. And it was exactly what I needed. Warming, soothing—just pure relief. The next day I visited Chaco Canyon in Greenwood and saw a steamed juice on their menu, too. How had I never noticed this before? Is hot juice a thing? Yes, apparently. And a very, very good thing at that. Again, 100% relief in a mug.

Normally, if I want something hot in the afternoon, I’d go for a decaf latte or chai, but these hot juices did a much better job of hitting the spot.

Must. Recreate. At home.

Capitol Hill isn’t an easy neighborhood to get to from where I live—otherwise, I’d just go straight to the source for my fix—so, I tried my hand at whipping up a version of juicebox’s recipe for their turmeric gold using my own juicer and espresso machine steamer. Not quite as good as the original, but a very respectable runner up if I do say so myself.

Enjoy!
